Day 175: Psalms 51:1-5
NKJ Psalm 51:1 To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your loving kindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. 2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. 3For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. 4Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight — That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge. 5Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
Lord, the only reason I can come to You is because of Your mercy. You have repeatedly shown me Your love and grace though I am unworthy to receive it. You have loved us while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8).
David sinned against You with Bathsheba. The sin was terrible and gave the enemies of God another excuse to blaspheme Your name. But knowing this, You still showed David His sin and helped him repent of his sin and confess it to you and to turn back to You. It is Your amazing grace that teaches us the ugliness of our sin, the horror of our sin, and the consequences of our sin.
Lord, I am a sinner. My heart is desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9). Though I have been saved by grace still I sin. You have said in Your Word that he who says he has no sin is a liar and the truth is not in him (I John 1:8 and 10). Even though I should know better, even though I should not sin because I see how foolish, how corrupt, how unwise, and destructive sin is, still I fall short of the glory of God. I still need to lay aside the sin that so easily besets me (Hebrews 12:1).
Purify my heart, O God. Make Your desires my desires. May Your heart be my heart. May I love what You love.
Lord, you have taken the time to show me my sin and to give me forgiveness and hope for everlasting life as I continue to turn from sins to You by the blood of the Lord Jesus.
Amen!
