We did not save ourselves, God did!

Day 137: Psalm 44: 3

Psalm 44:3 For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them; But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance Because You favored them.

You, O Triune God, were the One who accomplished these miracles and victories. It was not the strategies of men, though at times you used strategies. It was not human strength and resolve and faith, though these, too, were secondary instruments. But the battle belonged to the Lord. The outcome was predetermined and executed according to Your might, power, and design. Apart from You, we can do nothing, but with You, we can do all things.

When we prevail, it is because You ordained it. You give us credit for our strength and mighty feats, but they only happen because You rule and reign and allow us to triumph over our enemies.

            Our salvation was not accomplished by our works, but in and through You, Lord Jesus Christ, the perfect and holy Son, who became fully human while also being fully God in one person. You, Lord Jesus, lived a perfect sinless life, fulfilling all the prophecies of Your first coming. You fought against all Your enemies and the enemies of Your chosen people and You prevailed. You paid the penalty for all the sins of all Your people for all time as you shed Your blood on the cross. You proved Your salvation as You rose again from the dead.

            You, Lord Jesus, are the eternal right hand of God, the radiance of God’s glory, and the Savior of our souls. Out of Your own free will You have loved and saved a people for Your own possession. All praise and glory be to Your Name, Amen!
