Though We Stumble, God will Lead us Home

Day 99: Psalms 37:21-24

Psalm 37:21 The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives. 22For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth, But those cursed by Him shall be cut off. 23The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. 24Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.

Lord, You contrast the blessings to the righteous with the frustrations and evil of sinners. The wicked man does not handle his money rightly. He is more about taking than giving. He is living off borrowed possessions in the spiritual and in the literal senses. But those who are made righteous by the blood of Jesus seek to give.

As You have commanded Your people in Ephesians 4:28, “Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.” You move us from being takers to being givers. We have known and felt Your mercy and it makes us want to give to others and help them as You direct and allow.

One day we will inherit the earth. In Your Father’s house, Lord Jesus, are many rooms. You promised that You would prepare a place for us and bring us to Yourself (John 14:2). You have told us that the meek would inherit the earth (cf. Matthew 5:5). Three times in this Psalm you remind us that Your people will inherit the earth. In Your time, Your children will see the kingdom of this world become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ. The city of God will have descended to earth.

Until that time that You bring us safely to our heavenly home, You enable us to walk with You.  Even though we may stumble and perhaps even fall as Peter began to sink in the water, or as he stumbled after His great confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, only to try and hold Jesus back from the cross. Even though Peter failed and denied our Lord Jesus, still Jesus pursued Peter and restored him. Though he falls he shall not utterly be cast down.

Jesus, You have kept and are keeping Your promise to each generation of believers. You have held us close to Yourself and delivered us from our own sin again and again. Thank You, O God, our Savior, and our King.

Jesus Christ brought me to Himself at a very early age. I began seeking the Lord and writing prayer journals in my early teens and have continued to grow in my knowledge and experience of prayer. I am still learning and growing in my prayer life and long to help others grow in their prayer lives as well. I am not an expert, but a practitioner who needs God to continue to teach me to pray. Prayer is both simple, yet also profound. It is deep and draws us into the depth of God, but it is also so easy and wondrous that we can cry out to God with "Abba, Father" prayers because of the work of Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit. Prayer comes from God's heart, works in our hearts, and teaches us to go back to seek God's heart!
