We cannot trust ourselves, but only You

Day 79:  Psalms 33:17-22

Psalm 33:17 A horse is a vain hope for safety; Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength. 18Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy, 19To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine. 20Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield. 21For our heart shall rejoice in Him, Because we have trusted in His holy name. 2 Let Your mercy, O LORD, be upon us, Just as we hope in You.

Lord, we cannot deliver ourselves by our schemes and devices, by our wealth, or wisdom, or strength or goodness. We cannot save ourselves with technology, with human power, will, or any other power that is not Your power. Or only hope lies in You. We turn to You and call on You and rest in You, because You alone are God who has promised that whoever comes to You in true faith, You will not cast out.

Lord, You have delivered us again and again. We hope in You alone. We have seen our effort fail repeatedly, but You never fail. You have promised to bring us safely home to You. Give us Your rest and assurance. Forgive our doubts and unbelief and bring us safely home to live with You forever.

Our soul waits for You. You are our hope and shield. You have helped us repeatedly and You will help us and bring us safely home. We will rejoice, because You will deliver us. You have not bought us this far to abandon us.

Let Your mercy be upon us as we have hoped in You. Fulfill the promise of Your Word, Your word that cannot fail. Continue what You have begun, for it is in Jesus’ name alone that we pray it. Amen.

Jesus Christ brought me to Himself at a very early age. I began seeking the Lord and writing prayer journals in my early teens and have continued to grow in my knowledge and experience of prayer. I am still learning and growing in my prayer life and long to help others grow in their prayer lives as well. I am not an expert, but a practitioner who needs God to continue to teach me to pray. Prayer is both simple, yet also profound. It is deep and draws us into the depth of God, but it is also so easy and wondrous that we can cry out to God with "Abba, Father" prayers because of the work of Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit. Prayer comes from God's heart, works in our hearts, and teaches us to go back to seek God's heart!
