Praying that Our Faithful God Will Keep Us Faithful

Day 25:  Psalms 16:1-7

Psalm 16:1 Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust.

Almighty God, Who created all things, sustains all things, and leads all creation to Your most holy and appointed destiny. You have designed Your people to love and trust You, to walk with You and grow in their relationship with You and with one another. Yet, O Lord, we have seen the fickleness of those who seem to start the journey, but do not continue in a true and living faith. Like Pliable in the story of Pilgrim’s Progress, they easily turn aside when the way gets tough. O Lord God who has created us and sent Your eternal Son to save us from our sin by His perfect holy life, substitutionary death, and powerful resurrection, we come to You and ask that You will bring us safely through this life and into Your most perfect and glorious heavenly home!

As for me, I am more and more aware that You alone can help me continue to trust and obey You (Ps 27: 10). You alone can continue to change me and renew me (Ps 51: 10; Ez 36: 26, 27). O Lord, I have seen You working in my life (Ps 30: 11 & 12). I have seen You help me in prayer (Ps 6:9). But, Lord, I am so fickle. I follow You for a moment, a week, a day, but can be easily distracted. I have come to You; I have seen Your hand working in me, but I fall so far short (Heb 12: 1 & 2). Strengthen me, embolden me, make the weak strong (Heb 11: 34). Lord, in You I put my trust.

Psalm 16:2 O my soul, you have said to the Lord. You are my Lord.  My goodness is nothing apart from You.

Lord, I have no goodness apart from You. All my righteousness is like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6), but Christ is my righteousness, my hope, my life (I Corinthians 1:30: John 14:6).

Psalm 16:3 As for the saints who are on the earth, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.

Lord, Your holy ones that You have set apart to Yourself, these are precious to me because they are precious to You. Bring us together in faithful service to You. Lord, help me feed Your sheep (John 21:15). Help me find Your lambs.

Psalm 16:4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god. Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer.

Lord, there are many who do not follow You. Yet You are the one true God; there is no other (John 14:6). From the false gods of lust and greed and pride to the false gods of false religions, I will not take their names on my lips. Lord, I will not worship them or go after them.

Psalm 16:5 O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup. You maintain my lot.

Lord, You are my exceedingly great reward (Genesis 15:1). To know You is to live (Philippians 1:21). Let me live for You, in You, by You (John 15:1-14). Let me delight in You more than a man might rejoice over a worldly inheritance (Psalm 4:7; 119:127). My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning — Yes, more than those who watch for the morning (Psalm 130:6.)

Psalm 16:6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places. Yes, I have a good inheritance.

Lord, You are my inheritance. In You, I have more than all I need. I have You in my heart because You have chosen me. You have chosen to reveal Yourself to me and to my family. O Lord, I praise Your Name.

Psalm 16:7 I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel. My heart also instructs me in the night seasons.

Lord, thank You for teaching me about Your glory and grace, my sin and my need, the path I must walk by grace through faith alone in Your eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. He alone is the Savior of sinners. He is the only King of kings and Lord of lords.

Lord, You teach me from Your Word, by Your Spirit, through godly counsel, tapes, books, and other tools. You speak to me in reflections of my heart and mind and bring new thoughts and insights when I am still. How I thank and praise You!

Jesus Christ brought me to Himself at a very early age. I began seeking the Lord and writing prayer journals in my early teens and have continued to grow in my knowledge and experience of prayer. I am still learning and growing in my prayer life and long to help others grow in their prayer lives as well. I am not an expert, but a practitioner who needs God to continue to teach me to pray. Prayer is both simple, yet also profound. It is deep and draws us into the depth of God, but it is also so easy and wondrous that we can cry out to God with "Abba, Father" prayers because of the work of Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit. Prayer comes from God's heart, works in our hearts, and teaches us to go back to seek God's heart!
