Day 13: Psalms 9:1-5
Psalm 9:1 To the Chief Musician. To the tune of “Death of the Son.” A Psalm of David.
I will praise You, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. 2 I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.
O, for a heart to praise my God:
A heart from sin set free,
A heart that always feels the blood
So freely shed for me. (O For a Heart to Praise My God Words: Charles Wesley, Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1742.)
Lord, I do praise You (Psalm 119:164). You do all things well (Mark 7:37) – all things including overseeing the victories and failures, the joys and sorrows, redemption and judgment over men. O, that I might praise You with a whole heart, with all my being – loving You with heart, mind, soul, and strength (Psalm 111:1).
Lord, I will tell of Your marvelous works (Revelation 15:3). Fill me so full of Your Spirit that I cannot but speak of You (Acts 4:31).
Be my joy and delight (Job 33:26). May I spend all my life seeking, finding, serving, and delighting in You and the majesty of Your Name (Psalm 119:2). O Lord, there are times when I am lost in Your praise. There are times when it seems I have praised You with my whole heart – and for those moments, I give You thanks.
Lord, let me tell of Your creation, Your providence, miracles, and salvation, Your works in history, the church, in my own life and times. Indeed, I look back at those special moments in my life, and I am awed. Lord, You are marvelous and all Your works are wonderful. Lord, there is none like You. All that You do is for Your glory and the good of Your people. You touch our hearts, our lives. You perfectly fulfill Your will.
Lord, I am glad in You. I rejoice in You (Philippians 4:4). You are my chief delight. You cause me to sing, to dance, to live, to love. You are my joy and crown, the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8). You are perfect praise (Jeremiah 17:14). You are hope (Psalm 71:5) and peace (Ephesians 2:14) and love (I John 4:8). You are light (I John 1:5) and life (John 14:6), and heaven itself. You, who knew no sin, became sin for us that we might be declared righteous (II Corinthians 5:21).
I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High. Lord, I love to sing Your praises. You are God and praising You lifts my soul. Let me be more hearty, more consistent with my praise.
I love You, Lord. Lord, I do praise You.
Psalm 9:3 When my enemies turn back, They shall fall and perish at Your presence.
Lord, I know that You will deal with Your enemies in Your time and in Your way (Isaiah 26:11). Maybe they will repent of their evil (Ezekiel 33:11). Please forgive me for my evil and let me not be Your enemy in any way (James 4:4; Colossians 1:28; Philippians 3:18). Please help me confess any sins and keep short accounts with You (I John 1:9). Help me to know when, where, why, and how to confess, to repent, and to trust You to help me walk with You (Hebrews 12:1).
Lord, fill me with Your presence so that I might put away from me the attacks of the evil one. You have said, “Resist the devil and he shall flee from you.” (James 4:7). Help me seek and find and live with You (Deuteronomy 4:29; Proverbs 8:17; Jeremiah 29:13; Matthew 7:7). Help me seek You morning, noon, and night.
Psalm 9:4 For You have maintained my right and my cause; You sat on the throne judging in righteousness.
Lord, You have delivered me from those who hated me, from those who were too strong for me (Psalm 97:10; II Samuel 22:18). You have given me blessings in place of their cursings (Deuteronomy 23:5). You have helped me spiritually (Psalm 119:75), mentally (John 14:26), physically (Psalm 103:1-5). You even gave me their portion and chastised them for their deeds (Matthew 5:5).
Lord, please draw me even nearer to You; do not let the evil one overwhelm me (Psalm 22:11). Lord, You judge in righteousness (Genesis 18: 25). All that You do is good and right to me (Romans 8:28). Thank You that I have not gotten what I deserve; forgive me when I ask that others get what I think they deserve (Matthew 18:21-35). I do ask that You help resolve issues between myself and others (Hebrews 12:14).
Psalm 9:5 You have rebuked the nations, You have destroyed the wicked; You have blotted out their name forever and ever.
Lord, the nations opposed You. I think of little Israel and how the nations all around sought to destroy them. Yet You, O Lord, delivered them. In Jesus, You deliver all Your people. You will destroy all the wicked (Psalm 101:8). The nations that oppose You will fall. The coalitions of wickedness will perish. You will send the devil and his angels and all the wicked ones to the lake of fire, to the second death. Their names will never live before You again.
O Lord, how I long for that day – groaning with all of creation (Romans 8:19-24). Even so come quickly, Lord Jesus (Revelation 22:20).
AMEN!!!
