Lord, We Praise Your Person and Work

Day 11: Psalms 8:1-3

Psalm 8:1 To the Chief Musician. On the instrument of Gath. A Psalm of David.

O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!

Lord, there is none like You (I Samuel 2:2). You rule over the whole earth (Psalm 47:2)! Your name represents You. Just the mention of Your name presents Your majesty to us – to all of Your creation (Micah 5:4). You are our Lord, whether we admit it or not. Your name is perfection. Your joy is perfection. Your hope, Your peace, Your justice, and Your beauty are all perfect because You are perfect (Psalm 50:2; Colossians 3:14). Lord, there is none like You (Psalm 86:8).

Let me give You the honor that belongs to Your name (Psalm 66:2). Forgive my fickle heart that seeks You for a moment, but is so easily distracted by worldly, fleeting interests. Oh, how wicked is this human heart (Jeremiah 17:9)! The flesh still wars against the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-17). Romans 3:11 says that no one seeks after God, no not one. Lord, if it were not for Your Holy Spirit working in me, I would not seek You (Psalm27:8). Please forgive all my sin. I thank You, O Lord, for drawing me to You. Thank You for helping me pray and seek Your face (Psalm 80:3, 7, 19).

Your name indeed is excellent above all names. The only reason there is any other excellence in this world is because of the excellence that is in You (II Corinthians 4:7).

You have set Your glory above the heavens (Psalm 148:13). It is too great for us to fully grasp. We can see it, but it overwhelms us (Psalm 139:1-6). We see through a mirror dimly (I Corinthians 13:12). We only begin to see Your beauty and Your holiness. It is too great for us to see, to comprehend. Lord, we could not even stand in Your presence except for Your mercy, Your grace and Your glory revealed to us in Christ and by the ministry of Your Holy Spirit to our body, soul and spirit.

Psalm 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

Lord, Your glory is above the heavens and we cannot attain to it. Yet, O Lord, You have reached down to these babies, to that which is weak in this world, some of the most helpless beings in creation. They require so much attention, care, feeding, cleaning, training, and more. Yet through these little ones, You have ordained praise. Their very cries of life are praises to Your glory, evidence of faith, dependence and trust. People speak of the miracle of life. Do they fully grasp the preciousness of this, Your gift? This is Your miracle of life which praises You! These weak tiny babies will normally grow to be healthy and strong. Your very own Son, the eternal Son of God, also became a human baby – the Baby – who would silence the enemy and the avenger. You ordained and planned that it would be this way. What an amazing God! What a fantastic plan!

Psalm 8:3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained.

They are Yours – all the elements of the universe. You made the universe as a whole and all its parts. The glory of all the stars, the moon, the planets, indeed all there is in the heavens (Psalm 147:4). They glorify You as does all of Your creation.

From little babies to massive stars and galaxies, the evidence of Your handiwork — Your design and the imprint of Your hand — is obvious. The range of Your work is wondrous, wonderful beyond description (Psalm 104:24-26). From atomic particles to the whole of the universe, from micro systems to macro systems, the Lord God has made it all.

Jesus Christ brought me to Himself at a very early age. I began seeking the Lord and writing prayer journals in my early teens and have continued to grow in my knowledge and experience of prayer. I am still learning and growing in my prayer life and long to help others grow in their prayer lives as well. I am not an expert, but a practitioner who needs God to continue to teach me to pray. Prayer is both simple, yet also profound. It is deep and draws us into the depth of God, but it is also so easy and wondrous that we can cry out to God with "Abba, Father" prayers because of the work of Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit. Prayer comes from God's heart, works in our hearts, and teaches us to go back to seek God's heart!
