Wickedness in the world and in me

Day 182: Psalms 53:1-3

Psalm 53:1 To the Chief Musician. Set to “Mahalath.” A Contemplation of David. The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity; There is none who does good. 2God looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God. 3Every one of them has turned aside; They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.

Most holy and mighty and wondrous Lord, I call upon Your Name. The corruption of man is so great. In Genesis 6:5 You tell us “. . . the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Instead of loving and seeking after You, each of us has gone our own way (Isaiah 53:6). Though we truly know You are God, still we foolishly run from following You (Romans 1:21-22).

O Lord, what can we do against such great wickedness? Our own corruption eats us alive. We seek our own will and our own way and pursue our own destruction.

There is no one who does good in and of themselves. Without Your redeeming grace we are dead in our sin (Ephesians 2:1). Even our righteousness is filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6) apart from Your redeeming and sanctifying grace. Apart from the Lord Jesus Christ, there is no human being without sin. None of us would even seek after You if You did not touch our hearts and make us whole.

O Lord, when I read these words, my heart knows they are true. I weep for my sins and the sins of humanity. O Lord if it were not for Your grace we would totally despair. Lord, have mercy. Christ have mercy.

Even Christians are not yet what we ought to be. We spend so much of our time pursuing the treasures of this world. If it were not for your grace, we would not seek you at all. Lord, deliver us from the evil, the remaining blindness that is in our hearts.

There is forgiveness and deliverance, hope and help with You, O Lord. You will help Your children and bring us safely home. All thanks and praise to You, Lord Jesus! Amen!

Jesus Christ brought me to Himself at a very early age. I began seeking the Lord and writing prayer journals in my early teens and have continued to grow in my knowledge and experience of prayer. I am still learning and growing in my prayer life and long to help others grow in their prayer lives as well. I am not an expert, but a practitioner who needs God to continue to teach me to pray. Prayer is both simple, yet also profound. It is deep and draws us into the depth of God, but it is also so easy and wondrous that we can cry out to God with "Abba, Father" prayers because of the work of Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit. Prayer comes from God's heart, works in our hearts, and teaches us to go back to seek God's heart!
