Day 168: Psalms 49:15-20
Psalm 49:15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, For He shall receive me. Selah 16Do not be afraid when one becomes rich, When the glory of his house is increased; 17For when he dies he shall carry nothing away; His glory shall not descend after him. 18Though while he lives he blesses himself (For men will praise you when you do well for yourself), 19He shall go to the generation of his fathers; They shall never see light. 20A man who is in honor, yet does not understand, Is like the beasts that perish.
In the greatest sense, this Psalm points to the wondrous redemption accomplished by Your Son for all the sins of all Your people for all time. You did not let His flesh see corruption. And through Jesus, this Psalm can be applied to all who trust in Christ Jesus, because in Him our souls are redeemed.
O God, you will care for me, not because of what I have or because of what I have done, but because of Your grace and mercy, Your undeserved kindness to me through Jesus. And You will save me according to Your promise, by the matchless blood of Jesus Christ. Though worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh, in my new immortal body that Christ gives, I will see God, my Maker. I will live and not stay with those who face the second death in hell, but I will see the face of my Creator.
Even if a wicked person prospers in this life, I should not be worried or troubled. I do not need to be jealous or worry that God loves them and has ignored me. They cannot take their wealth with them. God is not impressed by our possessions or achievements.
Yes, such a person might praise themselves and delight in their accomplishments, but it will all pass away. Men may speak highly of them as often men do, but all their accomplishments will mean nothing unless they know the Lord. All the praises and accolades of men will be as nothing unless they know You, O Lord.
Lord, no matter how much money we have or do not have, may we realize that You alone are our greatest treasure, our first and highest love, our eternal joy and crown, forever and ever. Amen!
