Day 125: Psalms 42:1-2
Psalm 42:1 To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah. As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. 2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
Lord, You are my heart’s desire. You are the deepest need that I have. My soul is restless until it finds its rest in You. Though my spiritual eyes are too often dull, though the residual sinful flesh within me fights against seeking after You, yet I know that You alone are all I need. You have drawn me to Yourself with cords of love (Hosea 11:4).
You have gently wooed Your children to Yourself. You are the pursuing lover of our souls. Yet, we are so fickle. We have not loved You as we ought to love You, even though we know by Your grace that You are who and what we truly need. Lord, forgive us for not seeking You as we ought. We hunger and thirst for You and for Your righteousness. We are poor and needy. Carry us. See us in our need.
And You do draw us to Yourself, Lord Jesus. Where else would we go? You have the words of eternal life (John 6:68-69). We are Your sheep who hear Your voice. You call us by our names, and we follow You (John 10:1-4, 27). In Your life, we have life. In You we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:24-28).
Yet, O God, we long for You at this moment. Romans 8:22-23 reminds us that we long for You. We groan for the day when all things will be set right. We long for the glory of the Lord to cover the earth as the waters cover the sea (Isaiah 11: 9). We long for the day when there will be no more crying, pain, or tears (Revelation 21:4). We cry out to You, O Lord, how long until You come and bring us into Your favorable Presence (Psalm 13:1)? You are the water of life, the bread of life, the light of the world, the hope of the ages, and the reason for living.
Lord, our sin drove us from the garden of Eden and from the perfect harmony with You. Lord, we want to come back and be restored to our right relationship with You. Lord, come to us and make us whole. Restore us to our right relationship with You. We long and groan for the day of full glorification of Your Name and of these mortal frames.
Through Jesus Christ alone, Amen!
