Day 57: Psalms 27:2-3
Psalm 27:2-3 When the wicked came against me To eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell. 3Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear; Though war should rise against me, In this I will be confident.
O God, in this Psalm I see King David, the Lord Jesus Christ, and me. How many times when David was attacked by his enemies did you deliver him? Satan, the world, and the flesh of fallen men attacked the Lord Jesus all His earthly life. King Herod, the Pharisees, and the devil were against Christ. Jesus’ enemies and, at times, even His friends seemed to be against His person and work. Yet in Jesus Christ, all His and our enemies are overcome. Even sin and death, and hell are no longer the final victors over Your children.
Lord, my foes are too great for me. My own arm of flesh would fail me. Some may trust in horses, some may trust in chariots, but we will trust in the name of our God. Our King and our God, we do not fight against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers. Savior, if it were in our strength alone, we would fail. But You, O Lord Jesus Christ have defeated sin and death. You, Lord Jesus, have bound our enemy so that we can move forth. You have commanded us to resist the devil, then You promised, He will flee from us. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit do not let us give the devil a foothold in our lives, our families, our church, the community or beyond. Help us overcome him in the power of the atoning death and resurrection life of our Redeemer.
An army encamped against Elisha in Dothan and you showed his servant Gehazi and all who read God’s Word how the Lord provides for all things (II Kings 6:17). Your army surrounded the army of the enemy. Our warfare is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers. I John 4:4 says, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Greater is He that is in us than He that is in the world.
No matter how bad it gets, Lord, I know that You will always be with Your people, helping us, guiding us, forgiving us. You will see us through the fire and through the storm, through sickness and death.
Lord, help me remember You and Your mercies to me which are new every morning, indeed great is Your faithfulness to me, O Lord. My confidence is not in the arm of my flesh, but in the Arm of God, the Lamb of God.
Psalm 27:4-5 One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple. 5For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.
Again, O Triune God, I see David, the Lord Jesus, and my own life in this Psalm. I see David’s desire to live His life before You forever. I see the perfect love of the Trinity which has perfect communion within the persons of the Trinity and the perfect fellowship both in heaven and on earth. You have put it in my heart to desire and serve You as well. You have brought me, brought us, all your children to Yourself. You have redeemed multitudes without number, as the sands of the sea to love and obey and follow You.
O God, we were made to know You, to live in perfect harmony with You and with one another for all our lives and for eternity. Somehow in our deepest hearts we know this. You, O Lord, are our lives. In Your life we have life.
As the disciples responded when they were asked if they would leave Jesus, “Where else can we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Psalm 73:25-26 Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. 26My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
O Lord, help us truly know You and know that there is nothing more precious, more glorious, more powerful and wonderful, than knowing You, Your love and Your person. Help us to delight in Your beauty, Your awesome majesty and glory. O Lord, You are beautiful. You are altogether lovely.
Yet, Lord we must confess that at times we have not appreciated Your beauty and too often we have been fickle in our love toward You. Too often we have despised the things of God and loved the things of this world. O Lord, forgive us. O Lord help us. Lord, there is no one like You. You alone are the true, eternal, sovereign Lord over all Your creation. You are true beauty and glory. You are glory and truth.
Father, by Your Holy Spirit, let me heart hunger and thirst after You. Let me delight to seek You and find You. Let my heart pant after You as the deer pants after water. You are the ultimate fulfillment of our lives, of the lives of all Your people. Help us taste and see that the Lord is good.
Lord, You are my strength and shield. In Your light I see light. Your life is my life. You are my all in all. You keep me safe from the enemy by the deep inner workings in my heart. You did not promise that I would not be tempted. You did not promise that I would never sin. But You promised to be with me and to help me and to see me through the most difficult trials of life. Lord, help me overcome in the name and power and majesty of Jesus Christ.
Rock of Ages cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee. (Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me, Augustus M. Toplady, 1740-1778) Lord, may I please find Your inner peace and strength even in times of trouble. Help me for Your glory. Help me for the good instruction and encouragement it will be to all Your people who hear and see for themselves. Help me because of my great need, but especially because of Christ’s promise to be with us and to never forsake us.
Lord, You hide and protect me from their evil, but You also lift me up to be seen of men. You hold me forth as a trophy, not because of what I have done, but because of what you, Lord Jesus, have done in and through me. You set my feet upon a rock. Here is good footing and excellent position for warfare.
Psalm 27:6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; Therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the LORD.
As David’s victories were given by God and he was exalted as Israel’s King, so in a far more wondrous way, the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal, sinless Son of God, defeated not only earthly enemies, but Satan, sin, death, and all the enemies and will ultimately be lifted above all as King of all kings and Lord of all lords. Through King Jesus those who have attacked us, and all God’s people will see that You have saved us from His and our enemies. You have set us free from sin, death, and the grave. You have made us strong in Your strength. Though they attack us and though we might stumble, yet we will not totally fall. You delivered us from their traps and schemes, their conspiracies and evil devices.
You have caused me to joy and rejoice in You and in Your deliverance of Your unworthy servant. Lord, I praise You in the midst of Your people. I offer to You a sacrifice of joy. You have turned my mourning into dancing (Psalm 30:11). You have brought me out of the place of hiding and given me victory in Christ.
Lord, I sing to You. I sing praises to You. Some might tell me to be silent, but how can I be silent when my heart is full and overflowing with Your joy. Some have said we should not sing praises, but sing we must. Thank You, O Lord, that You sing over me. Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Lord, I am singing with You Your great redemption song. As Miriam sang by the sea when God’s people were delivered from Pharaoh and his armies, so we sing before You for the great redemption through the Lord Jesus from the greatest enemies of mankind, but also from those who would attack us and mistreat us and dishonor Your name.
Amen! ❤️
