Day 9: Psalms 7:1-8
Psalm 7:1 A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning the words of Cush, a Benjaminite. O LORD my God, in you do I take refuge; save me from all my pursuers and deliver me,
Lord, You alone are the One who protects me. Save me from all my persecutors (Psalm 22:20-21). Consider my affliction and deliver me (Psalm 119:153). Deliver me from all evil, from every kind of evil (II Timothy 4:18).
Psalm 7:2 lest like a lion they tear my soul apart, rending it in pieces, with none to deliver.
Do not let them tear me apart like a lion would rip up its prey with no one who can deliver me. Lord, You said of Your disciple Peter, before the resurrection of Christ, that Satan would not be allowed to sift him, but after he had fallen, You would restore him (Luke 22:31-32). Lord, we pray that we would not fall and be destroyed. Though we fall seven times, let us get up seven times and continue to follow You (Proverbs 24:16). Lord, deliver us from the evil one and His many schemes (II Corinthians 10:11). Help us trust You and obey Your Word to resist the devil so He will flee from us (James 4:7). Help us not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).
Psalm 7:3 O LORD my God, if I have done this, if there is wrong in my hands,
Lord, if I truly deserve this, if Christ’s righteousness is not in me; if I have sinned against them, please show me my sin and help me repent. As much as it is possible, let my desire be to live at peace with all men (Romans 12:18). Keep me from secret faults and presumptuous sins (Psalm 19:12-13). Help me not hold back from doing good to my neighbor when it is in my power to do it (Proverbs 3:27; James 2:14-17).
Psalm 7:4 if I have repaid my friend with evil or plundered my enemy without cause,
If I was evil to someone who was at peace with me, or if I took things from my enemy without proper cause, then there may be some issues that need to be resolved. Lord, I did not break Your command to not steal (Daniel 5:19). Jesus, You said I should not hate my brother, or call him a fool (Matthew 5:21-22). Lord, I have sought to be faithful to these, Your commands.
Psalm 7:5 let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it, and let him trample my life to the ground and lay my glory in the dust. Selah
It might be fair for them to overtake me, to trample my life and leave my honor in the dust, if I had maliciously attacked them, sinfully undermined them or in some other way sought to do them evil. While only You, O Lord are perfect in all you do, I have sought to love my friends and my enemies with your grace. But they have spoken evil of me and devised trouble (Ps 35: 15 – 17). Often, I have blessed those who cursed me and prayed for those who despitefully used me (Matthew 5:44-45). When others urged me to attack them, I showed them kindness, but their hearts are cold. They were irreconcilable and have not sought peace (II Timothy 3:1-5).
Psalm 7:6 Arise, O LORD, in your anger; lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies; awake for me; you have appointed a judgment.
Lord, stand up for me (Psalm 59:1-2). Deal with their evil. Lift Yourself to defend me from my enemies. Rise and deal with their evil against God’s people. Lord, they have sinned and refused to repent of their evil (Compare Psalm 73). They have gossiped and attacked the speck that is in other peoples’ eyes but they have not dealt with the log that is in their own eyes (Matthew 7:1-5).
Psalm 7:7 Let the assembly of the peoples be gathered about you; over it return on high.
Your people will rally to You because we know that You alone are our Savior. Therefore, show Your strength by rising to Your place (position) of authority (II Chronicles 6:41-42). For the sake of Your people, let Your Kingdom come, O Lord. Purify our hearts. Unite Your Church. Overcome our differences and the deep rifts between us and make us one in Christ (John 17:11).
Psalm 7:8 The LORD judges the peoples; judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and according to the integrity that is in me.
The Lord will judge the people. You will judge them by Your righteousness. Judge me, O Lord, by Christ’s righteousness in me – not by my righteousness. But let those who have attacked me see that they wrongfully attacked me.
Amen!
